Northvale firm recognized at science awards

A local company was recently honored in San Francisco with a Prism Award, given to companies that contribute innovations to the field of photonics.

Inrad Optics of Northvale was one of nine winners from around the globe. It was chosen for its work with coatings and materials. The company has devised Stilbene scintillation crystals, which glow when they sense fast neutrons. The coatings are used to enhance the next generation of scientific, security, and industrial systems.

Stilbene is a naturally occuring hydrocarbon that is referred to as a scintillator, meaning it has properties of luminescence. According to Inrad, the useful properties of Stilbene have been known for a long time, but it has been difficult to find at a reasonable price. Inrad has changed that by developing its own Stilbene crystals.

The Prism Awards have been given every year since 2009, to recognize those technological products that are light-based, and which improve the quality of life and solve problems. The awards are sponsored by Photonics Media in conjunction with the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). Photonics is the science that deals with the technical applications of light across the entire spectrum.

Inrad management might like to work with brochure printers to create a booklet discussing its breakthrough, and how other companies can incorporate the crystals into their products and processes.
