Northvale introduces bond for streetscaping work

On March 8, Northvale's Borough Council introduced a bond ordinance in the amount of $375,000 to pay for streetscaping work on Livingston Street.

At the same time, council members approved giving the contract to the lowest bidder, Zuccaro Inc., a company based in Saddle River.

The work is a continuation of a project that has already begun, and will include phases three and four, which call for installing pavers, concrete sidewalks, ADA compliant ramps, electrical services, and decorative street lights. Efforts will also be made to control sediment and soil erosion.

The area of the work will be on Livingston Street between Henmarken Drive and Campora Drive south of the road, and between Pierron Street and Pegasus Avenue on the north. There will be a preconstruction meeting within the next few weeks.

Northvale mayor Ed Piehler said streetscaping was vitally important, since there were places along Livingston where a lack of sidewalks forces people to walk in the street. This is a particulatly dangerous practice since Livingston is a busy four-lane road.

A public meeting about the ordinance is scheduled for April 12. Efforts like this can benefit if officials work with a flyer printing company, which can devise an informative mailer for residents, explaining the bond issue and its importance, and also giving a schedule of work, a list of potential work sites, and any planned road closures.
