Northvale bookstore owner encourages teens with donated books

Troubled by the fact that so many young people are no longer reading, Northvale resident and bookstore owner Kenny Sarfin decided to do something about it.

According to reports, Sarfin donated approximately 80 Books to Dwight Morrow High School, which he once attended.

He visited the school to donate the books formally, commenting that he had a wonderful time and thought perhaps it could use his help.

Sarfin won a mini-grant from James Patterson, the best-selling author of the Alex Cross detective novels, who has pledged grants totaling $1 million to help independent bookstores across the nation. The funds enabled Sarfin to give the books to the school, and his store, Books & Greetings, is the only one in New Jersey to win a Patterson grant.

Vicki Faithful-Hill, the school's library clerk, chose the books based on what she believed would be most appealing to Morrow's students. Faithful-Hill picked several of Patterson's books, and a wide variety of others spread across many genres, from science fiction to biographies. She said the school was happy to have the material, and noted that it’s important for people to be able to read.

School officials could work with a poster printing company to create colorful display Posters, inviting students to the library to come and look at the new books.
