Northvale area music school to hold outdoor festival

The Tappen-based school BridgeMusik will be hosting a series of outdoor concerts this May as a way to “restart” the area’s music scene.

The series, called ReStart Rockland, will include local music students as well as experienced professional performers. The opening concert will see solos and ensemble performances from BridgeMusik students, and a solo by acclaimed flute player Carol Wincenc. Future events will focus on themes like “100 Years of Tango”, “Now and Then”, or the July 3 children’s concert “What Makes Music American?” Many events will be held in partnership with the historic DeWint House, and hope to draw in music lovers from surrounding areas like Northvale and Sparkill.

Other artists involved include the Pedro Giraudo Trio, Dorian Winds, and jazz singer Shirley Crabbe. The opening show will include the premiere of two new compositions, one by composer Beata Moon commissioned by BridgeMusik and “Birdsongs for Equitable Togetherness”, which was created by flutist Nicole Mitchell to to be gifted to Wincenc. Concerts like this provide both fledgling and experienced musicians a chance to show what they can do, and often use tools like poster printing and social media to draw in audiences.

BridgeMusik’s Restart Rockland festival begins on May 1, with May 2 as a rain date, and runs at various dates until July 4, with all events held at the DeWint House.
