University in Newark receives special grant

Transfer students in the Honors Living-Learning Community (HLLC) at Rutgers University–Newark will now be supported by a $1m grant over a four-year period from Bank of America.

Such special awards are often made known to the college community and the surrounding neighborhoods through banner printing.

Those students who are in the HLLC are part of a college access program that enables them to make positive contributions within their communities, become thought leaders within their fields, and work for change in the world.

Nancy Cantor, Chancellor of Rutgers University–Newark, said that this gift from Bank of America will be significant for the HLLC. As a majority of students in the United States start their college careers at two-year institutions, these funds targeted for transfer students will help them to thrive and continue their pursuit of a college education, she said.

Bank of America, New Jersey President Bob Doherty added it is part of the bank’s commitment to the growth of the community to invest in partnerships and programs that address the complex challenges in society. The bank has had a partnership with the college for many years, and its support of the program aligns with its pledge to address issues that build sustainable communities, Doherty explained.

Those who are chosen for the program need to meet a set of custom-designed criteria that measure academic and artistic potential, social and emotional intelligence, and critical thinking skills among others.
