Salvatore Bontempo Memorial Park in the North Ward in Newark is scheduled to undergo green infrastructure improvements and beautification. The park is at the intersection of North 6th Street and 1st Avenue on Bloomfield Avenue.
The city will partner with the Parks and Recreation Department, Department of Water and Sewer, and the Business Improvement District of Bloomfield Avenue-Lower Broadway.
A supervising engineer with the Newark Department of Water and Sewer, Tosin Adetutu, said that the historic stone tower, the Pequannock Gate which is also known as the Bloomfield Tower, will be restored. He added that the space will now be usable for the public which lives at the corner of Bloomfield Avenue.
Officials from the city are proposing to remove the existing trees on the street and fence and build three new seating areas with chairs and tables, a new walkway through the park, and new concrete steps leading to the stone tower. ADA-friendly features will replace the curbs and sidewalks surrounding the property. New shrubs and other plants and seven trees will be part of the landscaping. Switchgrass and native wildflowers will be the ground cover of the open spaces.
Such projects can benefit from flyer printing to provide more details about updates and any new amenities.
Part of the motivation for this project is the Long Term Control Plan mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency.
