Unique food pantry opens in Newark

The Market at United Community Corporation (UCC) in Newark is now open on 18th Street in the West Ward. UCC is a non-profit organization in the city.

The Market is a choice-based grocery where residents can push their own shopping carts, look at the items on the shelves, and select the food that best meets their needs. Shoppers can schedule monthly appointments, use a shopping cart, and select pantry staples, frozen foods, and fresh produce from grocery shelves. There are aisles for breakfast items, soups, seasonal items, and baby food, among many other items and a register at the end where groceries are bagged. There is also a Wellpoint kiosk for health screening to address the intersection of health and social drivers.

This initiative was developed in partnership with Wellpoint, a health insurance agency; MEND, the hunger relief network; local farmers; and other community groups. It is a shift form the more traditional model of a food pantry that uses pre-packaged Bags. It is an experience whose goal is to remove barriers that often prevent people from seeking assistance and to restore dignity to those using a food pantry.

A member of the board of UCC, Dr. E. Asyah Aquil, said:

“It’s a place to come and they can shop with dignity.”
