Unique jazz concert comes to Newark

This month, the Newark Symphony Hall will be hosting a special event for the young and old alike.

The first is the WBGO Kids Jazz concert featuring Oran Etkin and his Timbalooloo Band. Prior to the performance, which takes place between 12:00 and 12:30 pm, there will an ‘Instrument Petting Zoo’, which is sponsored by the Newark School of the Arts.

The concert will begin with an introduction to the tuba and clarinet by Etkin, with performances of ‘Duke’s Place’, ‘Salt Peanuts’, and other songs familiar to children. Audience members will be invited to boogie with the band as it plays ‘All I Want to Do is Dance!’

The WBGO Kids Jazz Concert Series is designed to bring the culture of jazz and performances from the genre to local neighborhoods in New Jersey. The concerts are interactive and provide opportunities for kids to learn more about jazz and how it reflects the qualities of the community, the country, and the world. The artists hold question and answer sessions after the concert, and there are always small gifts and a chance to win a door prize.

The concert will be on Saturday October 17 with tickets available in the lobby on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis. Adults who want to attend need to be accompanied by at least one child. Direct Mail printing may be used to let those in the community become aware of this special concert and the opportunity it provides to learn about music.
