Online education made more affordable in Newark

The South Ward Promise Neighborhood has launched its first hybrid college in New Jersey, Gateway U, intended to offer a more affordable pathway to students in Newark looking to earn a college degree online.

Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) will be providing in-person personalized coaching support for Gateway U, a non-profit program. Such coaching services may take advantage of local printing services to provide educational materials to help students with their studies. In-person study space is also temporarily being offered at Newark Foundry.

Gateway U is part of an innovative initiative for workforce development that will prepare locals for careers in hight demand in the city. Its partnership with SNHU, one of the largest providers of online education in the country, will enable students to earn a bachelor’s degree at their own pace, and in as little as two to three years. Students will also receive real-world learning experiences to prepare them for meaningful careers. Tuition costs will be no more than $7,000 a year.

Among the degrees offered will be a bachelor and associate of arts in the areas of business management, healthcare management, and communications. Alumni of the KIPP charter schools will also be offered affordable higher education opportunities at Gateway U.

The next term for Gateway U begins Monday, January 3.
