On-demand transit service introduced in Newark
“Via Newark,” an on-demand weekend-only transit service, has been launched in Newark.
Free to use, this is a pilot program that will last six months. It was developed as a partnership between Via, a TransitTech provider, and Invest Newark. Its goal is to help visitors and residents affordably and conveniently access commercial, educational, and cultural destinations in Newark’s arts and education district.
This service is available to anyone within the city limits of Newark. They can book a shared on-demand ride to reach any place within the service zone. However, the focus of the program is to facilitate travel to the education and arts district points of interest. These include Newark Symphony Hall, Rutgers University-Newark, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and the Newark Museum.
The Via Newark app can be used to book these shared rides. The app then matches riders headed in the same direction into a shared vehicle. It may be necessary for riders to walk to the nearest street corner for drop-off or pickup to ensure trips are quick for everyone.
Local print shops can help spread the word about such new transit options with flyers, brochures, and other professionally printed materials.
Via Newark will operate on Friday evenings from 5:00pm to 10:00pm, on Saturdays from 11:00am to 11:00pm, and from noon to 9:00pm on Sundays.
