What's Happening in Newark, NJ…

Newark to expand homeless services

Renovations are currently underway at the Miller Street Pathways to Housing Center in Newark to transform the building into an emergency shelter with supportive services.

It will be opened 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year for those who are homeless in Newark and other nearby towns in Essex County.

The facility will span 24,000 square feet and provide access to many social services, such as nutrition advice, behavioral health services, counseling, and transportation. People will also be able to bathe or shower at the “drop-in” center, eat a hot meal prepared in the kitchen, and do their laundry. Poster printing can be used throughout the city so that homeless individuals in the area will know where they can spend the night.

There will be a total of 166 beds—84 for men and 44 for women, and 21 beds when a cold emergency is called in the city. There will be seven suites with 17 beds that can be used by families or those in isolation or quarantine. It will also have an activity room for men, and one for women.

The building was once the home to the Miller Street Elementary School. It was closed in 2012 and developers purchased it in 2017. The shelter is expected to be completed in September.
