ShopRite recently announced that it will be building a 67,000 square foot supermarket in Newark at the Springfield Avenue Marketplace as the anchor tenant. No doubt the chain is using flyer printing and poster printing to let about 280,000 residents of Newark and 60,000 college students and faculty become aware of the store, so as to plan for their future grocery shopping needs.
According to Richard Tucker, president of site owner Tucker Development, negotiations had been underway with several other retailers, including Wal-Mart, but it was determined that the most suitable tenant for the property would be ShopRite. Chairman of Working Families United for New Jersey, Charles Hall, added that ShopRite will be a family-friendly addition to the community.
The new ShopRite will be built on an 11-acre lot and form a section of a brand new development that will have 150 stores and apartments. Once completed, it is expected to be the largest of its kind in New Jersey and employ 300 people, both full-time and part-time, with benefits.
According to the president of the new ShopRite of Newark, Neil Greenstein, this new store is like a homecoming for the company, as the first warehouse for Wakefern (ShopRite’s parent company) was opened in 1946 in Newark. The store can become a premier retail destination for the city as part of the new development that will be built around it. Greenstein added that the company is looking forward to being a partner in the community.
