Eric Arce, from East High School in Newark, is one of the four finalists in the Kid Witness News 2014 video awards from Panasonic.
Arce created a public service video about cyber-bullying of two minutes in length. There were 50 submissions from more than 620 schools around the world, and his video was selected as a finalist.
Students in grades four through 12 will be the audience for the competition and some form of technology is encouraged to be used to get a message across that is of particular importance to them. In early May, the winner will represent the United States in the global competition.
Panasonic will hold a Kid Witness News ‘Winners Weekend’ at its North American corporate headquarters next month in which Arce and his classmates and Thomas Wolverton, his New Media Studies teacher, will participate.
According to Brad Haggerty, assistant superintendent of Newark, the video that Arce and his classmates created coveys the message of the desperation and anguish experienced by victims of cyber-bullying, yet does so in an artistic manner and in less than three minutes. Haggerty added that the Newark Public Schools is proud that Eric is serving as its video ambassador.
No doubt the high school is turning to poster printing to make this special announcement to the community, and to let people know of the May 9 finals.
