Principal Sam Garrison of Camden Street Elementary School, along with Monica Smith and her wife Amy, recently celebrated six years of collaborating on Bring Dinner Home, which is a community outreach effort they founded to bring positive change to the school located in Newark.
First, they held an early Thanksgiving dinner, which fed close to 1,000 children and their families.
Smith said that Bring Dinner Home will continue to work with several businesses based in New Jersey to support local communities throughout the year with funding and supplies. For example, she said that they have distributed gift cards to more than 2,100 families, 3,500 Books, 4,000 coats, and nearly 1,000 packages of diapers so far this year.
Last year, the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Technology (STEAM) Room at the school was funded by the organization for enabling early childhood learning, as well as the Camden Cares Room, which provides services to families that includes free school supplies, diapers, and laundry machines.
Smith added that with the success of the STEAM room, there will be a Family Flea Market held once a month at the school, so families can shop for clothing and other items, free of charge.
Poster printing companies can be hired to create Posters that can be displayed in the community, so people will be made aware of these various resources.
