Newark plans to upgrade to electric buses

A plan is underway by NJ Transit to bring electric buses to Newark.

Upgrades will be carried out at the Hilton Garage in Maplewood so that 16 electric vehicles powered by batteries can be housed to serve the Newark region. Flyer printing can be used to make residents aware of such updates and their benefits for travelers.

Kevin Corbett, CEO and President of NJ Transit, said that NJ Transit is looking to having a fleet of buses with zero emissions by 2040. He added that NJ Transit is moving towards this goal by taking advantage of its relationships with both national and international peer agencies to learn from their experiences and ensure that NJ Transit’s program is successful.

A consultant will need to put together construction documents for facility upgrades and utility power service for the garage in Maplewood. NJ Transit has applied for a grant from the federal government so that it can purchase eight electric buses to be based out of the garage, serving a route in Irvington and Newark.

If the grant is awarded to NJ Transit, the state will contribute an additional $4.5 million. This would bring the total of the grant award to $15 million. These funds will enable the purchase of electric vehicles to replace eight diesel-powered vehicle that run through Newark and Irvington on the No. 25 line.
