Newark plans for new mixed-use project

A new development project recently set up by the Zoning Board of Adjustment may be coming to a parcel of land on Livingston Street in the Central Ward of Newark.

The Art of Newark 2, LLC. Is looking to build a mixed-use building five stories high with 48 residential units. The plan calls for 29 parking spaces and 1,114 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor. The second through fifth floors will contain the apartment units and will be a mix of studios with either one or two bedrooms.

The property has been vacant for many years. Art of Newark is looking to help build up the surrounding area by turning the property into one that would blend in with the neighborhood. Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform the community of projects that are about to get underway.

Currently, the city has a goal to revitalize the downtown, which includes the Central Ward, and to bring more people into the area. This project is one of several planned for the neighborhood that includes one by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center for a mix of cultural spaces, retail establishments, restaurants, low-rise, and high-rise multifamily buildings. Another plan would see the creation of about 15 new town homes and condos, and the transformation of the Riverfront Stadium for the Newark Bears and Eagles into a hub of business spaces, residential units, and retail establishments.
