Thrillist, a website that informs its readers of the best in food, drink, and travel, has recently named Tops Diner in East Newark as part its rundown of the most famous restaurants in America.
According to Thrillist, to qualify for this list, a restaurant has to have been in business for over 30 years and still be a favorite among the crowds. The site is conducting a state-by-state rundown of America’s most famous eateries, making its selections based on popularity and longevity without actually reviewing the fare itself.
By making the list, Tops, estimated to have been set up in the 1930s or 1940s, is in the company of some eating places set up in the 19th Century, such as Katz in New York and The Virginian in Wyoming.
The New Jersey Board of Tourism points out that the state has more diners than any other state in the country, so it is a high accolade for a diner to be the most iconic.
The diner started as a restaurant/banquet hall in the 1920s and was purchased in 1972 by George Golemis, who is the father of the current owners, John and Jimmy. It is open Sunday through Thursday until 1:00 a.m. and closes for only two hours on Friday and Saturday nights.
The diner may turn to banner printing to promote this recognition throughout the community and to 15,000 people who come through its doors every week.
