The oldest terminal at Newark Liberty International Airport is currently being overhauled and will be replaced by a new one measuring a million square feet in area, with 33 gates and parking for 3,000 cars.
Named Terminal One, the project began last June but recently those who operate the airport, the Board of Commissioners for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, approved additional funding for the project and selected Parsons Transportation Group Inc. and Tutor Perini Corporation for the design and construction of the terminal.
It is expected that 23,000 jobs will be created as a result of the new terminal, generating $1.9bn in wages and stimulating economic activity in the area worth $4.6bn.
Terminal A, which is being upgraded in this project, is the oldest terminal at the airport and served 10.6 million passengers in 2016. Kevin O'Toole, Chairman of the Port Authority, commented that growing traveler needs could no longer be accommodated by the current terminal.
There will be new roadways and a pedestrian bridge as part of the project, which will help to reduce passenger congestion. There will also be updated technology at the new terminal, along with new retail and dining spaces.
