New teaching school to open in Newark

The most comprehensive teacher academy in New Jersey is making progress towards opening in Newark.

The Teacher Education Academy will be located at East Side High School, the largest high school in Newark, and will offer students in public schools a way for them to become teachers. Supporters of the Academy say that this will help increase the diversity among the teacher population in the state.

Once students graduate from the Academy, they will receive credits towards college and a substitute certificate. If they go on to finish college and complete the requirements of the state to become a teacher, they will receive a teaching contract of $50,000. Superintendent Roger León added that they basically have a job in the city and will not have to look in any other school district for employment.

Montclair State University and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) are collaborating on a curriculum to prepare graduates of this program for a teaching career. Adjunct professors will also be made available by the university to mentor students. Students will also have the opportunity to have an internship. Such organizations can also work together with Print shops to provide more information about such curriculum, available internships, and what to expect in a teaching career.

The Academy is expected to open sometime next year.
