New interim head of hospital appointed in Newark
The new interim CEO of University Hospital in Newark is Dr. Kaitlan Baston.
University Hospital is an academic medical center with 500 beds. It is the principal teaching hospital for Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, and all other medical education programs based in Newark.
Baston, who will no doubt be updating her business cards in the near future, will be filling the role of President and CEO Ed Jimenez, who is leaving next month to join Maine Line Health. She wants to ensure the transition is smooth while the Board of Directors of University Hospital looks for a permanent replacement.
Chair of the University Hospital Board of Directors, Tanya Freeman, said that Baston has expertise in both operational and clinical leadership. Freeman expressed her confidence that University Hospital will continue to drive innovation, deliver exceptional care, and build on its service to the community under Baston’s leadership.
Governor Phil Murphy said that Baston has spent her career delivering quality healthcare to those who need it the most. She served as health commissioner where she focused on improving maternal child health outcomes, decreasing disparities in health, and enhancing integrated care for substance-use disorders and behavioral health.
Baston said that she is looking forward to building on the work of her predecessor and expanding access to innovative care, supporting the staff, and advancing the master plan.
