The new enhanced gymnasium and community center in West Side Park is now opened in the Central Ward of Newark.
The community center spans 7,500 square feet and has a few classrooms for smaller programs, a large community room, updated restrooms, a professional kitchen, storage areas, and office space. The gymnasium was renovated with new lighting and HVAC systems.
There is now a circular driveway in the parking lot with a covered drop-off area by the front entrance. The tennis courts were moved close to the football field on South 13th Street and the basketball courts were rebuilt next to the new building on South 17th Street. Flyer printing is often used to provide more details on the features and benefits of such projects for the community.
A contract of $528,000 was awarded to Comito Associates of Newark and the builder was Tsivicos Enterprises, based in Neptune. The project cost close to $8m to build. A grant from the state was awarded to Essex County to cover the cost of the project.
Executive of Essex County, Joseph DiVincenzo, said that the new community center has more space for enrichment programs, gatherings, community meetings, and other events. He said that as an increasing number of people are visiting county parks, it has become important to update and modernize their facilities to keep up with the demand.
