The second location of the Freetown Café recently opened a new restaurant in downtown Newark.
The eatery seats 27 people and features cuisine friendly to a vegan diet featuring many Jamaican staples, such as braised oxtail, goat curry, and escovitched fish. It also offers paleo, pescetarian, vegan, and vegetarian options. The restaurant has an African décor and a coffee bar, and its dishes were created by Executive Chef Kwame Williams of the Montclair restaurant.
The owners are a brother and two sister team – Kwame, Kanika and Nataki Williams – and are hoping that they will be able to provide a nourishing alternative to the community of Newark, which is currently growing.
They added that the name of the café comes from the Jamaican town of Accompong, where the English were defeated by the Maroons who were then able to be freed from slavery. The name is a representation of the courage, ingenuity, and tenacity, which were characteristics of the Maroons and were necessary for entrepreneurial and independent success.
The Freetown Café will be open from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Friday and from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, serving breakfast and lunch items.
The owners might benefit from the assistance of various marketing services to promote their new restaurant throughout the community, with its unique menu and Jamaican food items.
