Infrastructure investment proposed for Newark

The United State Department of Transportation (DOT) has proposed investing $44m into infrastructure at the Port Street Corridor in Newark.

This is part of the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) discretionary grant, the goal of which is to modernize a stretch of road measuring 2.9 miles long, at the north entrance of the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal and Port Newark. Reducing travel times for vehicles and improving the safety of the roadway are expected outcomes of this project. Other outcomes expected from this project are to eliminate substandard and deteriorating roadway conditions near and at the port area and to alleviate concerns about traffic due to the growing volume of cargo going in and out of the terminals at the ports.

Funds from the INFRA grant will be used for additional improvements that will include the realignment of portions of Port, Corbin, and Kellogg Streets, replacement of the ramp at Corbin Street, and other intersections in the area. Local Print shops often help in spreading the word about such improvements to roadways and intersections throughout the community using Flyers and other printed materials.

Pete Buttigieg, United States Secretary of Transportation, said such investments in infrastructure will support regional economies and create jobs while encouraging innovation and environmental justice. The DOT prioritizes funding of such projects to rural areas to address the lack of investments there.
