The Hahne & Company building in downtown Newark recently reopened to much fanfare from both residents and city officials.
Three decades ago, the building closed and it has been vacant ever since. Now, due to the efforts of codevelopers Crawford Street Partners and Hanini Group, the building will be home to retail space, commercial, community and office uses, and mixed-income housing.
City officials have said that the building will have a cultural center for Rutgers University and the first Whole Foods grocery store in the city. There will also be 160 new apartments on the third and fourth floors of building, 64 of which will be allocated for low-income and working families. A new building, nine stories in height, will be constructed adjacent to the building and will share the lobby and public atrium of the existing building.
A restaurant measuring over 2,000 square feet in area will also be part of the building, run by chef and restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson.
Mayor Ras Baraka commented that the reopening of the building not only links the past with the possibilities the future, but will reestablish Newark as a center form commerce, art, and technological development.
