Grant awarded for Newark glass art classes

GlassRoots, an arts education center in Newark, has received a grant from the New Jersey Children’s Foundation (NJCF) which will enable over 100 students from nine schools in the city to use their imagination and creativity through the art of glass.

The grant will enable teaching artists from GlassRoots to teach mosaic lessons to students in nine public schools in Newark. Carol Losos, Executive Director of GlassRoots, said that the staff is passionate about and dedicated to its work, and such contributions make this work possible. Losos added that this support from the NJCF will enable her organization to serve more students in the Newark public school system and expressed her thanks for their support of the city.

The grant will enable GlassRoots to provide culturally responsive and hands-on art-making lessons that are aligned with the Learning Standards in Performing and Visual Arts and Science of the state. Students will learn about the history and medium of glass tools, color, design, and mosaics. Local Print shops can contribute to such lessons with printed materials covering more details about such topics.

In addition, such lessons help students to develop social-emotional learning skills such as teamwork, discipline, creative problem-solving, and resilience. They will also gain hands-on experience in math, physics, and chemistry and develop entrepreneurial skills as they learn how to market their creations.
