East Newark takes award for its breakfast brilliance

The New Jersey Food for Thought School Breakfast Challenge has awarded the school district of East Newark third place in the program, the goal of which is to increase participation in the federal school breakfast plan.

A $1,000 prize will be given to the district so that it can maintain its reduced price and free breakfast program. According to Advocates for Children of New Jersey, the district had 79 students in the plan in September 2013 and that number has risen to 195 as of May 2014; an increase of 147%. The non-profit also commented that 79% of its eligible students are now receiving free or reduced-price breakfast.

Executive director of Advocates for Children of New Jersey, Cecilia Zalkind, added that more of them are getting the nutrition they need in the morning so they can learn and concentrate.

East Newark was able to increase the number of students in the federal school breakfast program once it changed from serving breakfast before school started to after it began. This approach is known as ‘breakfast after the bell’ and has been found to increase participation in the number of eligible students.

Advocates for Children of New Jersey might consider using flyer printing to create a mailer with more information for those families entitled to enroll their children on the program.
