A groundbreaking was recently held in Newark for a park whose goal is to unify disparate and undeveloped locations in the downtown area.
The park, to be known as Mulberry Commons, will be three acres in size and will be just northwest of Newark Penn Station. The cost to construct the park will be $10m and will provide a public and focal gathering space in a new community of businesses and residences, which is expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in investment and over 5,000 jobs.
There will be walkways and seating, landscaped and tree-shaded lawns, a fountain for families and children to enjoy, and a pavilion.
The project is a public-private partnership, among the members of which are the Devils NHL hockey team, Prudential Center arena, the City of Newark, and Edison Properties, which also operates the parking lots in the undeveloped property that is still part of the neighborhood.
An additional project planned is a pedestrian bridge from Penn Station to the park. The construction of this bridge is expected to cost $30m.
Carmelo Garcia, who now acting deputy mayor for economic development, anticipates a completion date of October 1, 2018 for the park.
