Charter school to open in Newark

Sankofa Academy in Newark is planning to open this August. Designed to meet a growing need in the city for a culturally affirming and academically rigorous education, the school is part of the Marion P. Thomas Charter School District.

The name of the school was inspired by the West African symbol of a bird facing the rear moving forward, designed to show how society should both:

“honor the past while cultivating a stronger future.”

This school is the Central Ward district of Newark on Shipman Street. For the 2025-2026 academic year it will have 75 students in kindergarten through second grade and will have a class of 15 students for pre-kindergarten. The school plans to add one grade level each academic year.

Sankofa Academy plans to offer a community more like a village with an intimate learning environment that is focused on community engagement, real-world experience, parent and student voice, and culturally rich practices.

Brochure printing with more information about such schools and their features can help promote it throughout a community.
The community relations managing director of the Marion P. Thomas Charter School District, Michele Griffin, said the students will master core subjects and will learn more about their history so they can find joy in the richness of their heritage. Griffin added that cultural experts, guest speakers, and renowned photographers will be invited to the school to educate, inspire, and connect with students.
