A new high-tech kiosk was recently unveiled by the City of Newark as part of its new strategy that is part of the MetroLab@Newark smart city initiative.
The kiosk is the first one in the initiative and is located at Military Park. Web browsing, wayfinding services, and free Wi-Fi are some of the services offered by the kiosk. Various advertisements are also part of the screens, and help to pay for the cost of the kiosks.
From a technological standpoint, the kiosk’s plug-and-play capability and ability to run on an open platform will enable other vendors to add applications and sensors to these kiosks.
The New Jersey Institute of Technology, the New Jersey Innovation Institute, and several other private businesses are working with MetroLab@Newark on this initiative. It is a local version of the MetroLab initiative, which is based at the level of the federal government and is designed to bring cities and universities together in developing smart city projects.
Ras Baraka, Mayor of Newark, commented that the establishment of this kiosk is important for the City in demonstrating that it can be a hub for technology companies, and that Newark is a smart city with great Internet access and a tech-savvy workforce.
MetroLab@Newark benefits from the assistance of a local printing company to promote its smart city initiative by means of Flyers and other printed materials that can be distributed.
