The Walker Skills and Development Center is now open on Pacific Avenue in Jersey City.
This is a non-profit vocational school run by Team Walker that is on what was once the site of a warehouse. The school is designed to teach helpful new skills to students while providing them with a path to a vocational or technical career.
The cost to build the school over a period of two years was close to $875,000. The school is in its first semester, and has close to 60 students.
Each semester is about four months long and includes both learning in the classroom and practical applications. Each student will earn a certification in their trade that will enable them to take on apprenticeships and prepare them for a career. There is no cost to the students to attend.
Such schools can use brochure printing to promote their programs and benefits for students.
Mayor Steven Fulop said that this training facility is the largest in Jersey City that teaches the trades and technical skills to those between the ages of 16 and 24. He added that among these trades are plumbing, cosmetology, electrical, and carpentry.
He also commented that the trades are a viable career path, as not everyone needs to attend college, and may not be able to do so due to cost or performance in high school.
