The Italian Educational & Cultural Center at Casa Colombo in Jersey City will be hosting “Louis Prima: Rediscovering A Musical Icon” later this month.
This is an exhibition that explores the legacy and life of Louis Prima, who lived from 1910 to 1978. He was an extraordinary performer, a prolific songwriter, and a skilled jazzman. He is no longer a household name, but his music can be heard everywhere from television and films to Disney tunes, viral videos on TikTok, and hit songs by contemporary artists.
Examined in the exhibit are the background and inspiration of Prima, his artistic prowess, journey to success, and the role he played in transforming Las Vegas into a destination for nightlife. He was a Grammy Award winner and highlighted his Italian heritage at a time when such focus on ethnicity was no accepted. His legacy helped to pave the way for other performers, including Tony Bennet, Perry Como, and Frank Sintra.
This exhibition is produced in collaboration with the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles and the Gia Maione Prima Foundation. Poster printing can be used to promote such exhibitions throughout a city and neighboring communities.
An opening reception will be held from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday March 15. The exhibit runs through Saturday August 15. Hours of the exhibition are 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays and from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
