Safety upgrades to Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City are planned and will include the installation of rumble strips, updates to the sidewalks, and high-visibility crosswalks.
Jodi Drennan, President of the West Side Community Alliance, said that everyone in the community has been waiting for these improvements. Kennedy Boulevard is 13.5 miles long and runs from 92nd Street in North Bergen to the tip of Bayonne and is one which has been the scene of many incapacitating and moderate injuries, thousands of crashes, and even deaths.
Among the improvements are resurfacing of the pavement, better traffic lights, high-friction surfacing on select curves along the Boulevard, and curb improvements. There will also be center rumble strips along parts of the Boulevard and feedback Signs for drivers showing their speed in other areas. Flyer printing companies can be used to provide more details about such improvements and their exact locations.
James Kennelly, a spokesperson for Hudson County, said the project is still in the bidding process so a contractor has not yet been selected for the project.
The county is looking to further examine Kennedy Boulevard and has conducted walkability audits in segments of the roadway other than where the planned work is to be executed. Safe Streets JC is also examining other streets in Jersey City and is pressing for more traffic safety initiatives.
