A new Rent Relief Program will be offered this month in Jersey City.
Mayor Steven Fulop has announced that up to $10,000 will be given to low-income families in Jersey City who have experienced major hardships of a financial nature in the past year. Families that will be prioritized for the rental assistance will be those living in owner-occupied buildings with fewer than five apartments.
Funding for this program will come from the Emergency Rental Assistance Program of the United States Department of the Treasury in the amount of over $7m. The goal of the program is to help small property owners who live in their apartment buildings and to the renters in those buildings with the greatest need.
Fulop said he understands that not only are families facing challenges in paying their rent but that property owners are also challenged with paying their bills and mortgages. He said this is why this program is focusing on those buildings in which the owners also live, and those with four or fewer units as those are the ones which will benefit the most from this program. Local Print shops can be used to provide more information on how to apply for such programs and receive funding.
The Rent Relief Program will run from Tuesday, August 17 through Tuesday, August 31.
