Jersey City to offer additional rent relief

The Jersey City Housing Authority and Mayor Steve Fulop are expanding the city’s rent relief program to focus on low-income families.

The application period will assist low-income families in Jersey City who meet the eligibility requirements, providing up to $10,000 to help with rent. Those who are eligible will live at or below 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI). This phase of the program will enable those who are at risk of experiencing housing instability and earn up to 80% of the AMI to apply for assistance. The priority will be on those households with one or more members who have not been employed for 90 days prior to their application date and have an income of less than 50% of the AMI.

Local Print shops may be called upon to create Flyers and other materials to inform residents of such expanded programs.

Executive director of the Jersey City Housing Authority, Vivian Brady-Philips, said that her staff is available to help landlords and renters to complete the application. She added that there will be a random lottery to select those receiving these funds if this phase is oversubscribed. Funding for this program will come from the United States Department of the Treasury in Emergency Rental Assistance Program, from which the city received over $7m.

The program will open on Monday, October 4 and run through Monday, October 18.
