Jersey City theater to be restored to former glory

Work on the restoration of the Historic Loew’s Theatre on Journal Square in Jersey Square is set to get underway this month.

Devils Arena Entertainment (DAE) will be the redeveloper of the theater and plans to transform it into a center for the performing arts. Its plans are to create a space with 3,330 seats that will be state-of-the-art and to attract both up-and-coming and superstar performing artists. Additional improvements will include acoustic and visual upgrades, updated ticketing and concession areas, entrances and exits that are ADA compliant, and major improvements to the infrastructure including plumbing, HVAC, and electricity. Poster printing can be used at such sites to inform the community of any projects about to get underway.

Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione, a spokesperson for Jersey City, said that pre-development work has already been completed and all parties involved in the project are meeting monthly and conducting conversations with the Governor’s office.

The theater was built in 1929 by the Loew’s Corporation and presented both films and live performances for many years. At the time, it cost $2m to build this Baroque-style theater and it was featured as part of a Jersey Digs tour in 2016 to showcase its interior craftsmanship. Jersey City purchased the theater in 1993 and leased it to The Friends of the Loews for restoration efforts.

The renovations are expected to be completed in 2025 with a grand reopening planned.
