Jersey City students advance to national history contest

Three middle school students from Learning Community Charter School (LCCS) in Jersey City have won top honors at the New Jersey State National History Day competition.

The students – Colin Patnaik, Isaac Abreu, and Pavit Thakkar – will represent the state at the National History Day National Contest this month. News of such accomplishments is often made known throughout a city with flyer printing.

The Junior Group Documentary category will be where they compete with their production titled “Three Mile Island: Two Sides to a Story.” This documentary looks into the nuclear incident at Three Mile Island in 1979. The students are looking to explore the many viewpoints about the event and focus on the wider impact of the disaster on public health, community trust, and policy.

Colin Hogan, head of school at LCCS, praised the students for the depth of their work and their achievement. He said that the three students had demonstrated an outstanding level of passion and scholarship in examining this significant event. He added that Jersey City is proud of these students and excited to see them represent the state and the school at the national level.

The National History Day National Contest will take place on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park from Sunday, June 8 through Thursday, June 12.
