Jersey City receives funding for roadway project

The West Side Avenue Improvement Project in Jersey City has been awarded over $1.7m in state funds through the municipal aid grants for fiscal year 2022.

The funds are part of over $161m in grants from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and the Governor’s Office that 541 towns and cities across the state have received for bridges, roads, safety, and improvements to quality of life. When such a contract is awarded, the BJDOT provides 75% of the funding and the remaining 25% when the project is completed.

The project in Jersey City will include repaving West Side Avenue between Stegman Parkway and Broadway, and will include bump-outs, rain gardens, the addition of lighting, and bioswales. There are also plans to add pedestrian crossing Signs, improve sidewalks, improve the alignment of crosswalks, and mitigate flooding in the area to make the router safer for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. More details about such projects, so that members of the community are more aware of what they entail, are often provided with flyer printing.

Mira Prinze-Arey, councilwoman from Ward B, said that this project has been a priority for two and a half years. Prinze-Arey added that although work is already underway on the project, there will be more input on it from those in the community who are directly affected by it.
