Jersey City police department continues to grow

There are now 28 new members of the Jersey City Police Department, bringing the size of the department to over 950 officers as Mayor Steven Fulop looks to enhance public safety by growing the police force.

Local Print shops often assist in spreading the word about such new hires in the community with Flyers.

Fulop said one of the top priorities of the administration is to rebuild the police department so that public safety can be improved. He added that there was a goal to have 950 officers and to diversify the department. Of the new officers, two are from the Middle East, one is an Asian American, three are white, eight are African American, and 14 are Hispanic, so around 90% of the new recruits represent minority populations. He said that the result has been major improvements in all areas of the department, including strengthening relations between the police and the community and expanding public safety.

The new officers will be assigned foot patrols, primarily in the West and South Districts.

James Shea, director of Public Safety, said that the hundreds of police officers who have been hired since the start of Fulop’s term have been able to increase foot patrols with more visibility in the areas where it is needed the most. He added that the department is committed to reducing crime, increasing community relations, and improving public security.
