A Slow Streets Pilot Program is being implemented by Jersey City to support outdoor and recreation activity that would be safe and improve the mental and physical health of residents.
Certain streets in the city will be designated as “Slow Streets” and will be closed to through traffic. All existing parking will be maintained, and local traffic will have access at reduced speeds. Intersections will be partially closed to maintain adequate physical distancing for biking, exercise, walking, and many other outdoor activities. Print shops can be hired to create Signs along such streets and intersections to help direct traffic.
Steven Fulop, mayor of Jersey City, said that the city has been looking at alternative solutions brought on by recent events. The goal of the Slow Streets initiative, he added, is to create a relief valve as the parks and streets begin to get more crowded during the summer months.
The city is also working with restaurants to expand the capacity of outdoor seating and is expanding pedestrian malls. The Newark Avenue Pedestrian Mall, already in existence, is one of these and new pedestrian plazas and malls are being created along Bergen Avenue, Jersey Avenue, Grove Street, and 1st Street. Lastly, the city is planning to create six miles of protected bike lanes by the end of the year in addition to the 1.5 miles that have been recently completed.
