Jersey City pizza shop celebrates half-century of success

The 50th anniversary of Helen’s Pizza in Jersey City was recently celebrated by turning back time in terms of cost of items to its customers.

The price for a slice of pizza at the pizzeria which is located in Newark Avenue and was founded in 1968 was 25 cents as a way to commemorate 50 years of being in business.

There was a special ceremony at lunchtime which was attended by James Solomon, Ward E Councilman, and Steve Fulop, mayor of Jersey City. Steve Kalcanides, who is the second-generation owner of the store, was congratulated for the store’s success. Joining him were his wife, Maria, and mother, Irene.

The business was started by Nicholas, Kalcanides’ father, in 1968, after having spent five years in this country once he immigrated from Greece. Steve started running Helen’s in 1985. Steve commented that he renovated and expanded the pizzeria in 1989. His plans are that his son will be the next one to run the business.

The public was also excited at the price of 25 cents for a slice of pizza that day. Until late in the afternoon there was a line outside the store that went all the way to store next door.
