Iconic square in Jersey City unveiled

Bergen Square in Jersey City at the corner of Academy Street and Bergen Avenue is now open.

Bergen Square has recently been renovated and is one of the town squares that is the oldest in the United States. The renovations included converting surface parking lots into park space and a pedestrian plaza spanning 5,400 square feet. This redesigned public square features native greenery, updates for safer traffic, a 30-foot oak tree, and an area for community events.

Additional updates include increasing the number of parking spaces, raising the intersection to improve the safety of pedestrians, and creating a more streamlined and safer drop-off area for students who attend the Martin Luther King, Jr. School. Other improvements include native landscaping; stops for public transit with bus shelters; historic signage; and the relocation of the drop-off area for the school bus for P.S. 11 to Academy Street. The city will partner with the Journal Square Special Improvement District to maintain and clean the amenities in the plaza daily.

More details about such renovations and updates can be made available to the public with flyer printing.

Barkha Patel, director of infrastructure for the city, said that Bergen Square is a unique urban space that is part of the daily life of the people in the city. She added that now that it has been renovated, with its history and culture incorporated into the redesign, its full potential can now be realized.
