Funds awarded to Jersey City for air quality monitoring program

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded Jersey City a grant of $465,250 that will enable the creation of an air quality monitoring initiative for three years designed to enhance environmental health awareness. The focus will be on the Bergen-Lafayette and Greenville neighborhoods.

Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute at Rutgers, Greater Neighborhood Alliance, Sustainable Jersey City, Gensler, and the Jersey City Housing Authority will collaborate on this program. Data on air quality will be made available to the public in real time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week through an online dashboard which will be developed by Temboo.

Training will be provided to local representatives who will then offer educational programs that will provide residents with the knowledge to address issues of air quality to be able to improve their health outcomes. This is the beginning of a larger effort to connect climate and health as part of the development of public policy at the local level.

News of such innovative programs and their benefits can be disseminated throughout a city with flyer printing.

Founder of Sustainable Jersey City, Debra Italiano, said that this funding is important to improving environmental health in the neighborhoods of Lafayette and Greenville. She added that providing training as well as real-time air quality data will provide a model for sustainable urban development in Jersey City.
