Fair celebrates history of Jersey City

The second Jersey City History Fair of the Jersey City Public Schools was recently held at the Ferris High School.

The fair was the result of a collaboration between two Social Studies supervisors, Elizabeth Iannitelli and Melissa dos Santos, designed to build relationships with students, teachers, and principals. Its goal was also to encourage those who participated in the fair to look more closely at their communities and neighborhoods, to research what has happened in them, and then present their findings in innovative and exciting ways. The hope is that this fair will attract more students and grow every year.

Chief of staff for the Jersey City Public Schools, Maryann Dickar, commented that the fair helps people to learn new things about Jersey City.

Students in grades three through 12 were able to participate in the fair. In order to qualify, they needed to conduct research, cite their sources, and then respond to an analytical question in an essay. Judges for the essays were a combination of teachers and supervisors, which judged each essay based on originality, content, and sources. The highest scoring essays from students were then able to take part in the fair, with three winners selected from each grade level.
