Singer/songwriter to visit Freehold

The daughter of a Western Kentucky farmer, a singer on her way to Freehold hopes her work will bring people together.

S.G. Goodman’s debut album was based on her childhood experience growing up in Hickman, a town with a population of 3,000, located on the Mississippi River. Her songs often reflect both the economic, political, and social systems that shaped her life and her family’s, and how outsiders think of rural towns. She is currently recording with Verve Forecast Records, and appeared as a solo artist in 2021 at the Newport Folk Festival. She has released two albums, 2020’s “Old Time Feeling,” and “Teeth Marks,” which dropped in 2022.

Her childhood in the South makes the region a main character in her songs. Her connection to her region of the country feels authentic, not performative, and she seems both tough and vulnerable. She notes that she grew as a singer when she began performing with a full band, because she had to be heard, and that enabled her to let loose.

When she discusses her debut album, she reveals that it was not a concept album, but a “snapshot” of a certain time in her life when she was dealing with heartbreak, as well as simply living her life, worrying about her neighbors, and wondering about her economic future.

S.G. Goodman will appear September 25 at the Concerts in the Studio in Freehold. When events like this are scheduled organizers can use poster printing to publicize them.
