Experienced tribute band comes to Freehold

A tribute band with a 30-year career behind them is coming to Freehold.

Dark Star Orchestra (DSO) is a tribute band for the Grateful Dead, and takes an unusual approach to their shows. Instead of simply performing Grateful Dead’s biggest hits, or interpreting them through their own perspective, DSO bases its shows on setlists garnered from the Dead’s three decades of touring, playing the songs in the same order.

This approach means that fans see a concert that duplicates the original show from the first song to the last. With more than 3,300 shows to choose from, even long-time fans are likely to see a performance that is new to them. A review says:

“. . .the superb rendition of incredible music by a very talented band creates a very special evening for concert goers.”

DSO formed in Chicago in 1997, and over the years since has been joined on stage by six members of the original group: Vince Welnick, Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Bob Weir, and Phil Lesh.

Dark Star Orchestra will perform at a large, open-air venue, ParkStage, which is a collaboration between Monmouth County Tourism and the Count Basie Center for the Arts. The stage is located at the East Freehold Park Showgrounds, and the show is set for Saturday, June 20 at 6.00 pm. When they plan performances like this, organizers can use poster printing to create suitable advertising for them.
