Celebrating Juneteenth in Freehold

Juneteenth is a date of great historic significance to the nation, and especially to African Americans. A celebration is coming up to commemorate the occasion.

Juneteenth acknowledges the official end of slavery in the United States. President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, but the news did not spread to the slave-owning states until June 19, 1863, when General Gordon Granger made the announcement in Galveston, Texas. The holiday thus was celebrated throughout the nation on that date. In 2021, it was made a national federal holiday when President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act.

The Monmouth County Diversity Alliance, Inc. (MCDA), is the organizer of the three-day event. The networking mixer on the first day will give the founders of MCDA a chance to speak to community leaders about how they can work together to address inclusion, equity, and diversity. The second day brings a march and festival, and a gala is scheduled for the final day. Events like this are perfect places for attendees to share Business Cards.

The mixer is set for June 17, beginning at 6:00 pm, at The American Hotel in Freehold. June 18 brings a ceremony and march to the Squirreltown Cemetery from Bethel AME Church. At 12:00 pm, a festival with vendors, guest speakers, music, food, and more will be held at the Hall of Records. June 19 will cap off the weekend with a formal gala, held at the Bella Vista Country Club in Marlboro, New Jersey.
