Flemington reading program sees its first graduates

The first graduating class of the Flemington-Raritan Regional School District Reading Recovery training site celebrated graduation on May 2nd.

The group included Joe Kassick, a teacher at the Flemington-Raritan Regional School district, as well as teachers from several other surrounding school districts.

The Reading Recovery program is one of a number of initiatives set up to help young children who are struggling to learn to read. Flemington, New Jersey, now benefits from a local training program focused on this method.

Reading Recovery works in addition to the regular in-classroom reading instruction that students receive. Its teachers work with struggling students on a daily basis, delivering one-on-one instructions.

The program can last up to 20 weeks and is considered a Tier 3 intervention, aligning with district program Response to Intervention. Parents or educators interested in more information about the program should visit the Reading Recovery website, which features flyer and brochure printing materials for download and reproduction.

The Flemington-Raritan site is the newest Reading Recovery location in the New Jersey area. Kassick was originally trained as a Teacher-Leader in Flemington in 2012-2013; this year, he trained the first Reading Recovery class in the borough. He also met with trained Reading Recovery teachers to conduct professional development, focusing on continuing to explore the theory and practice of the research-based program.
