Tanae Lewis, from Youngsville, is a student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (A&T) State University and has been named a Goldwater Scholar for 2022.

The Goldwater Scholarship Program was named for Senator Barry Goldwater and is designed to encourage students who are outstanding to pursue careers in research in the field of mathematics, engineering, and the natural sciences. This program is funded by the federal government and is the top award for undergraduate students. It offers up to $7,500 for two years of expenses for their education and the opportunity to have access to a network of researchers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for a lifetime.
Lewis is pursuing a bachelor’s in chemistry and is an Aggie Student Success leader and peer mentor in the College of Science and Technology (CoST). She is a recipient of a scholarship from the Department of Chemistry and a 21 SciTech Scholar in CoST for 2019-2021. Lewis plans to earn a Ph.D. in biochemistry and pursue a career focused on research on neurodegenerative diseases.
Professor of chemistry and program director of A&T’s Honors Program, Margaret I. Kanipes, Ph.D., expressed the pride of the department and the university of this accomplishment of Lewis earning a Goldwater Scholarship.
