Youngsville area to walk through Black history

There will be Black History Month Walking Tours of the Northeast Community in Wake Forest during February. History-loving residents of nearby Youngsville may be interested in such tours.

Staff from the Wake Forest Historical Museum and Historic Preservation Planning will be leading the tours. Among the places that will be visited will be the African American Cemetery, the Ailey Young House (which has been recently restored), the Alston-Massenburg Center, and the Olive Branch Baptist Church. During each tour, the architectural history and development of the area will be discussed, along with the notable women and men who shaped the Northeast Community. All tours will be conducted outside.

Historical tours such as these often provide printed maps and Flyers with more information about the places on the route, which can be created by local Print shops. Brochures for walking tours of the downtown historic district and other areas of interest are also provided by the Historic Preservation Commission.

All tours will begin at Taylor Street Park and follow East Spring Street, then walk along North White Street, follow East Juniper Avenue, and return to Taylor Street Park. Pre-registration is required, and each tour is limited to the first 15 people who sign up.

These walking tours will take place every Tuesday and Thursday in February beginning at 1:00 pm, lasting approximately 90 minutes each.
