A grant of $2.5m from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has been given to Wake Forest University (WFU) to partner with two other universities in support of the work of the Peruvian National Park Service.
This partnership will connect policymakers and park managers with scientists in new ways. Residents in the Youngsville area may be interested in this significant work, knowledge of which can be disseminated throughout the community with flyer printing.
The Center for Protected Areas Management of Colorado State University, the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru School of Governance and Public Policy, and the Andrew Sabin Family Center for Environment and Sustainability (Sabin Center) at Wake Forest will focus on the capacity and science development for the Peruvian National Parks. This project will connect with the broader “Science for Parks” initiative of the Sabin Center.
In total, 21 government scientists, academics, and senior-level Peruvian natural resource managers will participate in two learning exchanges, one of which will be in the southeastern United States and the other based in western reserves and parks in the United States. These exchanges will highlight networks in the United States that will provide a foundation for the Peruvian national parks to develop their own science networks.
Senior Fellow and Research Professor in Biology at WFU Sabin Center, Carol Mitchell, said that these funds will lead to greater communications and deeper connections between national park managers and scientists.
